Competition entry and proposal for the new identity for Gower College.

Client: Gower College (Swansea College & Gorseinon College)

As a previous student at Gorseinon College, I was informed of the recent merger between Swansea College and Gorseinon College and their open request to produce a new identity for their merged college, Gower College.

The new brand had to be designed to reflect Gower College’s ambition for high-quality education and represent the universal appeal of the college within its staff and students. Additionally, the logo had to work in English as well as Welsh and portray the friendly open character I had as a student there. The primary audience for the Gower College brand were those who experienced the college on a daily basis; that of its staff and its students (17 – 50). However, a secondary audience to the brandwas that of prospective students and their parents, plus lecturers who wanted to work in the college. As a result, the final brand had to be accessible and traditional but also reflect the new, contemporary attitude of the new college itself.

I wanted to portray in the logo a sense of community and coming together and the beautiful location of the college. I also designed the logo with a wide variety of applications as possible and produced a tessellating pattern that could be applied onto any future products/vehicles/etc.

This was a challenging but enjoyable and enlightening project and was well-received by the staff at the college.

Client: N/A / Self-directed

Branding concept for a ecological loyalty scheme.

Turf was built around the concept that people would be rewarded with points for making ‘greener’ decisions online and offline.

Points would be received online in the form of a social networking site. Each individual would have their own homepage or ‘turf’ on the site where they can collect their points, view their points total and share how they are living more green. Individuals could also earn more points in the form of an online simulation game. Each ‘turf’ would have its own little town. By making small changes to the town’s lifestyle, the individual is encouraged to make the town happier and thus make more points. Additionally, adjacent ‘turftowns’ interact with each other and individuals can help others to gain more points, raising their own point count in the process. Points could be exchanged for goods that would help consumers live more healthily, such as exercise equipment or adventure holidays.

There are several examples of how consumers could earn points offline too. One includes the option of a loyalty card. The individual would earn points by swiping this card when using public transport. A consumer could buy a bottle of water with the Turf logo on it and a reward code. They could receive points by typing in a code on the bottle.

Identity concept for a new nightclub in the heart of Cardiff’s city centre.

Switching Neon
Neon’s brief required a truly iconic logo design that could be seen as the foremost voice on new R&B, urban and dance music. It required to attract Cardiff’s strong music culture and needed to be something quite special. I came up with several concepts for this brief, but finally decided on the concept of ‘switching on’ to Neon’s music and experience.

The identity was designed with mass production in mind and was directly inspired by the strong work released for the Hacienda club in Manchester.

Promotional brochure concept produced for Film4’s Eight Greats season, celebrating the work of directors such as Hitchcock, Coppola and Godard.

This brochure had to be designed with a limited colour print in mind, while still portraying Film4’s classic brand values. I designed it specifically to show the work of the directors off in the best light and used the left-hand side of each double spread as a stage for the work itself. The brochure was also designed to act like a coffee table book during the season and was therefore designed with a minimalist look to ensure the legibility of the information.

Client: Channel 4 /Film4

Competition entry and proposal for a promotional poster promoting Film4’s Frightfest season.

Film4 specifically requested (as part of a competition brief) a promotional poster to display outside the Odeon Cinema in Leicester Square. It needed to demonstrate the sophisticated character of their channel as well as the character of the films that they were showing. I’m not a huge fan of horror films, so I wanted to produce something typographic and subtle with Film4’s colour scheme and not an over the top, over-gory design that would not have worked well with Film4’s brand identity.

I honestly feel the concept of this poster is very successful because of its impact when in situ.

Fictional identity concept for Jolley & Maplin, an animation and film company based in contemporary Cardiff Bay, specialising in work for children and young people.

Client: fictional client (Jolley & Maplin, film and animation)

Fictional identity concept for Jolley & Maplin, an animation and film company based in contemporary Cardiff Bay, specialising in work for children and young people.

Welsh, Unique, Young
The brief set by Jolley & Maplin required a logo and identity that reflected the company’s energetic passion and patroticism as a Welsh bilingual company and a unique appearance that demonstrated their empathy with the young. I began with playing with Welsh icons such as the dragon and the leek and then finally, with the sheep to produce a unique animated and vibrant character that reflected the quirkiness and ‘Welshness’ of the company itself as the ‘black sheep’ of Cardiff Bay.

Green Fields
The identity and stationery design was directly inspired by the character within the logo itself. The ‘green fields’ of the stationery design fill up the first third of the letterhead, giving immediate exposure to the company’s identity right from opening the envelope.

Branding concept produced with the design agency Hoffi for Cerdd/Music 2009, a music festival set around the museums of Wales.

Cerdd/Music 2009 required a clear, contemporary logo and identity design that fitted perfectly with the existing ‘corner’ identity of the National Museums of Wales. The festival wanted to attract a much younger audience to the museums and the logo design needed to reflect the more modern attitude of this new audience. Merchandise was also considered as part of the brief.

The final concept I produced was based around the musical note which gave a clear recognizable icon for music and as a logo itself. The branding and merchandise was then developed around this geometric shape and the original brand colours provided in the museum’s brand guidelines.

Competition entry for a new promotional website for Print Studio, UWIC’s primary copy shop located within each of their four campuses.

The brief provided by the managers of Print Studio was very specific, and required a design that fitted within UWIC’s own brand identity (designed by a different external company). Despite being part of UWIC, something that was a priority within the brief, Print Studio wanted a clear brand identity of their own with a clear ‘studenty’ feel while also being attractive to outside clients and businesses. The website also needed to have an open structure allowing for the possible implementation of an online submission system.

The original UWIC brand guidelines included several disability and accessibility issues that required a more simple and considered design where content and the customization of this content was important. While researching the company and discussing with them to discover their brand values, I noticed a large pin board at the back of each of the copy shop’s branches. Orders were placed upon this pin board whereby customers could see where their order was in the line. I felt that this was a shared aspect between Print Studio and its clients and gave the final design its friendly, informal look.

I was contacted by Alana to produce a new promotional website for her new restaurant based in the heart of Llanelli. The restaurant serves Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with the best of locally sourced Welsh produce.

Alana wanted a design that attracted to local contemporary families and the cosmopolitan workers of the local television studio, Tinopolis. She already had a strong brand identity in place and wanted this delicate, feminine brand to be evident within the web design. Together, we discussed further goals for the website which included promotion of the restaurant’s deli and the application of an online take-away style ordering system with online menus.

While producing the final design, I was heavily inspired by the Mediterranean culture and the concept of an old recipe book which gave the feel of trusted but well-loved food.
